Sunset at the Joliette
Sunset at the Joliette
Video with sound, 8 Minute
By capturing the shadows of cars projected onto the surfaces of buildings along the edge of the highway, Sener-Yilmaz Aslan sets side by side the complexity of the urban planning of La Joliette and the obstructive effects it produces. The photographer thus highlights the way in which the neighborhood’s inhabitants are now denied access to the coastal landscape because of these architectures (residential, port-related, commercial, or business) that deprive them of a fleeting yet vital moment of contemplation: the sunset over the sea. Watching the passing shadows then becomes for them one of the only means at their disposal to reclaim this moment of pleasure and suspension, despite the environmental, noise, and visual pollution that today defines their daily life. Between poetry and social critique, Sener-Yilmaz Aslan’s work offers a sensitive, almost choreographic image of these symbolic and political power relations that shape the economy of vision at the heart of this territory.
